No. 47 / 2003

When working with the previous post for Scarlet Street #46, which includes a lot of material on Julie Adams (and continues here with Issue #47) I was very gratified; recalling my memories of her in television and film and in person and basking in the realization she was still with us at age 92 (16 months ahead of my own mother).   After recently losing my Mom's sister Betty at age 94...and then having the daughter of Ray Bradbury, Bettina, suddenly taken away from us at nearly the same age my father had passed away (the early 60s), it was a very nice feeling knowing Ms. Adams was still around and into her 90s, and it was a hopeful feeling.

The very evening I'd completed my introduction and finished my work making it ready for posting, I learned of Julie Adams' passing. The most logical thing to do would have been to mention her and dedicate the posting to her, especially since she was so prominently featured in that particular magazine.   It was the loss of Bettina Bradbury, still so very fresh to those who knew her, which compelled me to let her dedication remain and give mention instead to Ms. Adams here.  I also didn't want the two to 'share' the same dedication, and was also pleased to know there is more of Ms. Adams covered in this post for Issue #47, so I decided to make a remembrance of her now.

When I had the chance to meet Julie Adams it was at one of the Monster Bash conventions in 2010 which featured many of the stars we knew from those iconic films of the 1950s including favorite Ann "The War of the Worlds" Robinson, Jimmy "Invaders from Mars" Hunt, Billy "The Day the Earth Stood Still" Gray, director Bert I. Gordon and his daughter Susan Gordon and, of course, Julie Adams.

It was an exciting time.  Although we'd lost Forry Ackerman at the end of 2008, there was now a re-birth of his 'baby', Famous Monsters of Filmland, headed by publisher Philip Kim.  The Scarlet Street gang was still honoring the memory of Richard Valley with yet another issue of "Scarlet - The Film Magazine" helmed by SS alumni Kevin Shinnick and Harry Long.  Along with the celebrities mentioned the convention was highlighting these magazine events.

Although Kevin couldn't make it, the rest of us including the new magazine's publisher Arlene Domkowski, attended a special dinner with many of the convention attendees with the exception of Ms. Adams, causing us to miss a talk she was giving to her admiring audience that evening.  The next day, however, during those early morning hours as some of us lined up for coffee and pastries near the hotel lobby, there she was, Julie Adams, right in line with the rest of us 'mortals' allowing myself a moment to shake her hand and converse a little.  By this time in my life I couldn't ask for anything more and am still so grateful for the opportunity just to share space with her!

So, there you have it, from one eternal fan to all others like me out there in universe, I wish to honor and remember dear Julie Adams here and keep her forever within the hearts of all who loved her in life.  The angels in the sky keep getting more and more beautiful.
